about

A time capsule for the uncertainty of growing up, The Ground That Holds You dramatically questions identity, especially in the presence of someone you admire. The title of the song, "The Ground That Holds You", represents the seemingly unattainable depths of a person’s aura. Unable to feel seen by this person, I questioned whether I could really see myself for who I am. The lyric that plays in the outro sums this up by saying, "Is it all for everyone else when I thought it's for no one but myself?"

This song walks the line between minimalism and maximalism with sparse verses and explosive choruses layered with vocal harmonies. The style of this song was inspired by midwest emo, with bands like Clique, and American Football. The muffled drums in the 2nd verse were inspired by Moon Song by Phoebe Bridgers. Adding many layers of vocal harmonies along with twinkly sounding acoustic guitars has become a style I identify with, first being exposed to it by Jacob Collier. I recorded and produced this song, doing everything except playing the drums.

lyrics

The Ground That Holds You

The distance pulls me in
You contradict every part
Of who I was
But I’ve been drifting closer to you

And the closer I get to you
The more I can feel you breathe
So real
And so human
And so different
From how I usually see you

I hear every little thing we talk about
Running through my head when you’re around
When I try to stand I fall down
The ground that holds you
Is the one I can’t break through

Is it all for everyone else when I
Thought it’s for no one but myself

You sweep the surface out from under
My feet

I can dance around my room and feel no worries at all
But I can’t face you

I hear every little thing we talk about
Running through my head when you’re around
When I try to stand I fall down
The ground that holds you
Is the one I can’t break through

How do I stand?
What is my face doing?
When should I laugh?
I’m not making any eye contact
Don’t act uncomfortable
Can they tell?

Is it all for everyone else when I
Thought it’s for no one but myself
